Counselling Support

** COVID-19 UPDATE **

Liberate’s usual counselling offering (below) is suspended in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, we are offering free counselling over telephone or video link to anyone who is struggling to cope with the changes to daily life imposed by the virus. You do not have to be from one of the groups listed below to take advantage of this offer. It is open to anyone living in Jersey and will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

The offer aims to assist those experiencing stress, anxiety, panic, depression, grief and other mental health issues due to the conditions imposed by the crisis, such as:

  • Change in routine;
  • Separation from family and friends;
  • Loss of freedom;
  • Being quarantined in a home that is unsafe  or hostile;
  • Easier access at home to addictive substances;
  • Taking on more care responsibilities due to a lack of access to regular care for a family member with a disability;
  • Lack of employment/boredom;
  • Job insecurity;
  • Debt;
  • Uncertainty over own disease status;
  • Concern about loved ones being infected;
  • Bereavement.

Because this is an emergency response to the current situation, clients will be offered three one hour sessions only.

Counselling support is offered by CPCAB Therapeutic Counsellors trained to Diploma Level 4, who are in their final year and completing their practical workplace experience hours. All Liberate’s counsellors are DBS checked.

Liberate offers a means-tested therapeutic counselling support service to those aged 16 and over. The service gives priority to people from the following groups, but we will consider applications from other people who would like counselling support, where space permits –

  • those questioning their sexuality and/or sexual identity;
  • those questioning their gender identity and/or who are transgender/gender non-conforming; and,
  • those living with HIV or with a positive HIV diagnosis.

Counselling support is offered by CPCAB Therapeutic Counsellors trained to Diploma Level 4, who are in their final year and completing their practical workplace experience hours. All Liberate’s counsellors are DBS checked.

(Please note: our counsellors are not trained gender therapists, but can provide therapeutic support whilst a client is waiting to see a gender therapist.)

Liberate asks prospective clients to complete an initial assessment to determine whether Liberate’s therapists will be able to meet the client’s therapeutic needs.

Initally, clients are offered a one hour session every week for six weeks at a maximum cost of £300. Clients in full time education or in receipt of social security support receive free sessions. We ask other clients to provide us with financial information to complete a means-test to determine whether a fee is appropriate for their sessions.
