The Civil Rights marches of the 1960s pre-date the Gay Rights marches by about a decade, and the experience of black protesters, who demanded action to address racism, informed the later protests by LGBTQ+ groups.

As the Black Lives Matter campaigns of 2020 highlighted systemic (and individual) racism still exists, with issues including racial health inequalities; racial inequality in the employment market; prisons disproportionately occupied by people of colour; and Black people – especially women – often demonised or ignored when they speak up.
